More than 50 years ago, a group of designers put pencil to paper with a new kind of sports car in mind. Lee Iacocca wanted something fresh, sporty, and easy on the wallet—something for the emerging market of teenagers who simply wouldn’t settle for their grandma’s Fairlane.
What they created turned a lot of heads, but never made it past the concept stage. The drawings and early models featured sleek lines, pointed ends and a road-hugging frame. At the time, it looked like a vehicle for a new era (or from another planet).

What do the Model A and the Escape have in common? True, they are both Ford vehicles. But they also have both utilized cutting-edge tailgate/liftgate technology — well, at least the Model A did back in the day! It was 1929, and the Model A used a chain-link drop-down tailgate. Then when the 1950s rolled around, the Country Squire Wagon used counterbalancing hinges with push-button open. The ‘60s were roaring, even in the liftgate world – Ford debuted the Fairlane Falcon magic liftgate that would both swing down andto the side. The Bronco saw a swinging latch, fold-up window and drop-down tailgate in 1977, followed two years later by the electronically operated roll-down rear window.

“We test any component that people commonly touch for more than 30 seconds.” Those are the words of Linda Schmalz, and she’s talking about the interior of your Ford. Linda, the Supervisor of Ford Core Material Engineering, works with a team of engineers to test steering wheels, seats, armrests and shifters for allergens. Those are the parts of the interior we touch the most. If you’re lucky enough not to be familiar with the term allergens, know they are usually associated with seasonal weather and rash-inducing materials.

Can you believe the Ford Mustang will soon turn 50? That’s right – and it hasn’t missed a year of production! It had quite the debut in 1964, well beyond its game-changing performance and looks. That first year saw it join the ranks of Indy 500 pace car and also take a lead role in the James Bond flick “Goldfinger.” Steve McQueen ensured the pony car’s spot in movie history when he did “Bullitt” in 1968 (that was a 390 GT model; in 2001, the first Bullitt GT model came on the scene).
